Changing a Chandelier from Modern to French Country

I was shopping with my daughter at Lowe's several months ago when I spotted this chandelier.  It was on clearance for $30 and they had about six of them boxed up and stacked in the center of the aisle.

I got so excited that as I was trying to lift one of the boxes off the stack I knocked the display chandelier on the floor!  The store employee was so nice as he picked it up, reassured me that I hadn't damaged it at all, and put it back on the stack.

But the whole thing flustered me enough that I didn't realize that I should get two!  Also, my daughter had walked away quietly like she didn't know me.  Ha!

My husband looked very surprised when I carried it in to the house.  He knows this is not my style. But I had plans for it!

I layered on a beige paint with chalk additive and then a white chalk paint, giving it the chippy look I wanted.  I'm always surprised how well chalk paint adheres.  I didn't do any prep work - just painted it.

I then added tear drop crystals and a chain of crystals - all from Save-On-Crafts.  I keep a supply of these around for whenever I need to bling something up.

Et voila!

It doesn't even look like the same chandelier.  And I got it for $30!

love and blessings~

  1. Wow! Very clever. I have never tried the chalk paint, or milk paint, but hear they are both great to work with. Thirty dollars makes it a steal! Thanks for sharing it.

  2. Hi Lynda,

I was just leaving a comment at Summits of Rubies but discovered, unlike this blog, there is no 'anonymous' option to write a comment. I don't have any of those other accounts, (Word Press, Type Pad, etc.) in fact, I don't even know what they are, lol. Maybe there is a reason you prefer it that way, but if you weren't aware of it, and want to change it, now you are. I like being able to comment to people, but often find it's not a possibility, unfortunately. Lovely blogs, both of them. And your daughter's, as well. :o) ~~~ Pam

  4. Get job on the chanty. I just changed mine to almost the same chanty, except it is black metal. I didn't put any crystals on it. My friend remodeled her kitchen and it was in there and was from Pottery Barn, so she didn't need anymore and gave it to me. Woohoo....
You really got a terrific deal and the chalk paint looks so good.

    1. BJ, you make me laugh! I didn't get another one. I wish I had! We have found all of our chandeliers at Lowe's clearance. One morning I was in the middle of fixing breakfast for house guests when my husband called from Lowe's. He had spotted two very large chandeliers on clearance for $60. I dropped my spatula and ran to Lowe's. That's our chandelier that now hangs in the family room! Thanks for always commenting! You're so kind!
