Our Guest Room

Happy Fourth of July Weekend!

We are in the midst of a master bathroom remodel and are being held up by plumbing issues. Everything is torn out - shower, toilet, tub, vanity, carpet and tile floor - and we are waiting on a plumber. I've taken lots of (ugly) pictures and will share them with you as we get closer to the end.

In the meantime, our guest room is now filled with the overflow from our bathroom. I didn't get all the pictures I would have like to have gotten and now I can't.  But, this is how it looked the day of the photo shoot with Romantic Homes.

Most things in here are the same. I had been on the hunt for a night stand for the left of the bed. I've had this sewing machine table for a long time. I moved it from another room and painted it white. It's a perfect fit and a great height.

Because our house will most likely be published in a Spring issue, I added some faux Spring boughs to the night stand and left all the Spring florals.

I didn't get any pictures of the other side of the room but you can see that we added a chair from the living room because I don't have a good chair for in here right now. You can also glimpse the corner of my desk that's opposite the bed in the photo below. There's a built in shelf above the closet door that runs that length of the room that I've  filled with treasures. Kristen is looking at everything in this photo.

 This chandelier was a garage sale find that I painted with chalk paint and added crystals to.

 I whipped up another pillow to sit on this chair.

The prints on this side of the room are the same.

These lamps were black when I purchased them. I spray painted them an antique white and added crystals. 

They tie-in nicely with the chandelier.  These are the plates you can see sitting on corbels on either side of the window.

It was a lot of fun watching Kristen get into position for 'the shot.' 

The last time I showed you this room there was this sweet baby on the bed.  This sweet baby turned one last week!

And our Rhynn turned four!

We are so blessed!  Here we are at the double birthday celebration on my daughter's deck.

God in Our Home

Blogland is made up of such a sweet bunch of people!  And you always have the nicest things to say. I appreciate every kind comment and also those that remain quiet when my ideas aren't great!  lol

But the comments that I have loved the most when people visit our home or my blog is that our home feels so peaceful and happy.  I'd like to think that you can 'see' God's presence in our home.

You've probably noticed that I have several things that have scripture on them around our house but I'd like to share with you some of the things in our home that have meaning to me and that reflect God's goodness to me.

I love this scripture.  Many may imagine God as a disciplinarian and He is, for our own good, because He loves us.  But He's also that Daddy that takes such joy in His children's accomplishments. This scripture always reminds me that God "likes" me.

I used to have 'the benediction' painted around our entry hall.  I loved knowing that people received a blessing every time they entered our home or left.  I've missed having it here since we redecorated.

You can also see the angel by our front door.  It's since been painted an antique white.

Sometimes I look at our entry hall and try to figure out how to have the Benediction in here again. For the time being it's reduced to this.

But almost every thing in my house has a spiritual meaning to me.  I'd like to share with you the reminders of God that are in our house that you may not realize.

One of my favorites is this picture of a door.  I bought this when we lived in Virginia and have always thought it was beautiful.

I really can't say why this seems like such a Godly picture to me.  It seems to hold a promise of an intimacy with God; of entering the Holy of Holies, of peace and joy in His garden.

 "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." Revelation 3:20

I love it and am always happy when it works with my decorating.

I haven't shown you this picture before.  I'm sorry this photo is so bad.  It's very cloudy and rainy here today and I've been 'cheating' and using old photos.

It hangs in our hallway.  I'd like to get a frame for it.  It's two people thanking God for their food.  I love it because it's very French and very Godly.

You may have noticed the Fleur de Lis above our stove in our kitchen.

 A dear friend gave it to me because she knew how much I love these.  The Fleur de Lis represents the Trinity.

The three sheaves gathered together into one entity.  The French had this symbol on all their shields and swords as a tribute to their faith in God.

I have several more things I'd like to show you but it is so dark here today that I'm not able to get any good pictures. We're supposed to get some sunshine tomorrow and I'm hoping to get some good pictures and share some other things that I see as Godly in our home that may surprise you.

We're also working on a new table top for Laura's house and some other projects that I hope to share soon.

I hope you're all surviving the wild Spring weather!  It's been relatively calm and very beautiful here in Michigan.

Our 18 year old son lives at home and is attending the nearby university.  He was a little guy once and his bedroom has been upstairs.  We've suggested a couple of times that he move to the basement bedroom and recently he made the decision to change his headquarters.

It makes a lot of sense. The only time any one goes in the basement right now is when my husband uses our weight room that's down there.

I made them a 'man-cave' and they're not using it!  :)

 There's a wet bar and mini-fridge, a pool table, a weight room - you would think it was a guy's paradise.

But the good news for me is that now my husband is going to move his office upstairs so that we have two guest rooms on our main floor.

And that means I get to put together a new guest room!

I have a great pair of twin headboards that Mark made a couple of years ago out of shuttered doors. And I have two twin beds put together in the basement to make a king-sized bed.  And I have a beautiful desk that I love and I haven't had a place for. So the only thing I'll need is a night stand. I've been planning this day for a while.  ;)

I've also been pinning guest rooms trying to decide what direction I'll go.

I think this is my favorite.  What a pretty combination - very soft lavender walls with lots of white. I can't tell what fabric the window treatment and dust ruffles are made out of but I love the color combination.  Of course, I don't have these wonderful beds which really 'make' the room!

I love this combination of beige and toile and this room has the same beautiful style of bed spreads.

The room below is Pamela Pierce.  I love the rolled up comforters and her signature beige and confit of pink roses.

This room is closer to the size of our very small room.  Beautiful simplicity.

I think I'm going to go very soft and neutral with not a speck of blue.

So in the next couple of weeks we'll be moving furniture up and down two flights of stairs.  And I'll be repainting a couple of rooms.  And we're still waiting for our new living room window.

Our Guest Room

We have two small bedrooms on our main floor.  Both are small and have South facing windows.  

We use one as my husband's office and one as a guest room.  We have a full bath in the hallway next to these bedrooms and we can close the hallway off with a pocket door which makes for nice privacy for our guests.

This winter I painted and redecorated our guest room.

Here is the room as it looked last year...

I painted it the same color I used in our family room. Even though it's the same color it looks more green in this room than in the family room.

The matelasse bedspread is the same but I added a new voile bedskirt that I ordered from Joss&Main.

I centered the bed under the window and made the new curtains.  They're a faux silk and I lined them with white curtain lining. 

I'd like to find another nightstand for the left of the bed.  Until then a birdcage full of antique books fills the space.

There's definitely a bird theme in this room.  I found two of these plates at HomeGoods and thought they'd be perfect to set on top of corbels on either side of the window.

This silly little bird sits on the nightstand.  My daughter laughed when she saw him (her?) in my cart but she smells delicious!  When the sun warms this room, you can smell this potpourri the minute you walk in the room.  

These pictures used to be in our family room but I like them better in here.  And that's the nice thing about having similar colors in each room - you can move things around.

I bought the chandelier at a garage sale for $2.00.  The former owner promised it worked.  It was old gold and had orange crystals hanging from it.  She had taken it down when they bought their house and replaced it with something more modern.

I painted it with beige chalk paint and then added touches of white here and there, letting the old gold show through in areas.  Then draped it with crystals I got at Save-0n-Crafts.

After all that work, we still weren't sure it would work.  My husband hooked it up and went back downstairs to turn on the power and heard me cheering!  

This chair sits across the room next to the window.  

(I'm sorry I couldn't get a picture that ties the two ends of room together.  The window causes too much glare.)  

It used to be in our living room and I reupholstered it last year like I did the one in our family room.  I love it in here but am wondering it if I should paint the frame a lighter color now.

The sweet teapot was a Mother's Day gift many, many years ago.  The white embroidered and white candlewick pillow cases were given to me by my mom.

I will show you the other side of the room soon.  I bought a pretty little desk that fits well there but I haven't finished a few details yet.

I also would like to make some Roman shades to replace the blinds in here.  But I'm enjoying the changes.  This room is always bright and sunny and I love to sit at the desk and write.
