A Formal French Rug

Our main floor was decorated in French Country reds and yellows for the first decade that we lived in our house.  A little more than two years ago I made some dramatic changes to the color scheme and went to the blues and neutrals that you see now.

For several years I had a beautiful rug in our family room that I purchased through QVC.  It's a Royal Palace 100% wool rug that measures 9x12.  When I changed our decor, I thought about selling it but just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I had purchased a jute rug at World Market for our living room that I really liked - until I realized that it was shedding. Badly.  In fact, it was like the rug was made out of dirt.  Every time I looked, our hardwood floors were covered with a layer of silt with little black dots in it.  It traveled out from under the rug and was spreading around the room, making it impossible to keep the floors clean.  And I was getting concerned that it was going to ruin the shine of the floors.

I had tried my wool rug in here before and I didn't like it but I had my furniture slip covered in a very bright white at the time.  It suddenly dawned on me the other day that now that the furniture was a more neutral shade, the rug might work!

It's a much more formal look but I think I like it.  What I really like is the size and feel of the rug.  It's obviously larger than the 'dirt rug' and is a really nice, thick quality.
Here's a picture of the jute rug.
And here's my new/old rug!
It has my fleur de lis that I love.  The beiges are good.  It's has the added interest of the red roses which I'm not sure about but all in all, I would be really happy to use this rug again.
And since I already have a jute rug (that doesn't shed) in the family room, it's nice to have something different in here.  Our Family Room
I put the dirt rug in the entry hall.  I'm mad at it and want people to wipe their feet on it.  You can't make it dirty, right?
In its defense, it looks pretty nice in here.  And I wanted a new rug for this room.
So...win, win...and even win, right?!

Have a wonderful weekend!

love and blessings~

  4. I love the rug change up that you did. the new larger one looks feminine, soft, and very French. I think it looks perfect in there. I like the natural one in the foyer too. I think they both fit the size of the space just right. Your living room is beautiful!

  5. I, too, love the rug change.
You also helped me make a decision on a sofa I want to purchase. I know white is so popular now for sofas and chairs...I have tried so hard to think I would like a white sofa.....still, when I look at furniture stores, the gorgeous grays make me swoon. I am going today and possible buy the gray one I've been drooling over for several weeks...I love your neutral furniture color.....

    1. Thanks so much, BJ! I'm so glad this helped you! I love the white sofas too and like I mentioned in my post - for a while I had this room all slipcovered in white. But I'm much happier with this look too. So many homes in Blogland have the white and it's easy to get impressed by how beautiful their homes look. We just each have to find our own style and it took me a while too!

  7. Your rug is classic and beautiful--love your living room and the soft hues. I had a seagrass rug that was a dirt collector, too. Yours looks mighty handsome in the foyer. Enjoy your weekend.

  8. If we could only figure out which jute rugs do this shedding before we buy them! I like the wool rug in this room better. The size seems to set the room off and it's beautiful!

  9. I absolutely love the new rug in your living room, it adds a touch of understated elegance! The jute rug is definitely better suited to the foyer and really looks like it belongs there, hopefully the shedding won't be too bad.

    1. Thank you, Diva! At least if it sheds it's on ceramic tile, which will still be bad, but won't damage the floor. Thanks for your kind comment!

    2. Lynda your room is beautiful and I love the rug. I tried to pin but it won't let me. Feeling a bit sorry for the dirt rug but I think it looks great in the foyer. What a lovely place to be scorned and rejected in! Lisa

    3. Thank you, Lisa! I don't know why it wouldn't pin? Sorry! The dirt rug and I have 'made up.' I think it's doing a good job at the front door! Thanks for visiting and commenting - you made me laugh!

  14. I think it's gorgeous, Lynda! I love a good thick rug to sink your toes into. I like the look of jute, but I think they're a little scratchy and I've always thought our cats would chew them to pieces. Love your new look with the beautiful rug!

It's so unfortunate that your rug sheds so much, but it's funny that you are mad at it!

Win, win all over. I love this kind of decorating, when old is new. The jute is just right at the entrance, specially for dirty shoes, lol..

Good move with the rugs. I like the French rug in your living room...and the jute rug at the entry! Both look great where they are.
As the french would say...C'est si bon! And we both seem to love blue and white china ware. Visiting from Cindy's Dwellings.
