Kitchen Reveal

I'm very thankful for our kitchen.  It's open to the whole main floor and is wonderful for family dinners and entertaining.  It has tons of cabinet storage and counter top space. It lacks nothing when it comes to the footprint but I have wanted to redo it since the day we bought our house - 11 years ago.

Because it was ugly.

But we didn't feel good about spending tens of thousands of dollars when functionally it was fine. And being the do-it-yourselfers that we are, we didn't want to go through a major remodel and have someone come in and tear everything out.

And then last year I discovered an online company that would make cabinet doors to order and I was home free!  (I will give you the details later in this post.)

Here is the kitchen we lived with for a decade -
And here is our kitchen today...

There are still several things we'd like to do.  We are planning on buying a new stainless gas range. We put in a bead board back splash which has been a nice solution but will probably put in a tile or tin back splash at some time.  And we'd like to get new counter tops and a farmhouse sink.

But this has been a huge change and I'm loving it!

While we waited for our new cabinet doors to arrive, I started painting all the cabinets.  I used Sherwin Williams Alabaster in their best quality paint that they specifically make for cabinets. We also got new hardware in an oiled bronze.

We ordered two cabinet doors the appropriate size to make this vent cover.  The fleur de lis is a gift from a friend.

This is the view into the family room.

And the view from my kitchen sink into our family room.

Below is the view from our dining room.  A built-in china cabinet separates our dining room from our family room.  We'd like to replace the wet bar sink with something in oiled bronze.  There is also a space in the lower cabinet where an ice maker used to be.  It didn't work and we are either going to fill the space in with a wine fridge or shelving.  It is to the right of the picture and since it isn't finished yet, I didn't include it.
This is the view looking from the family room to our entry hall.
Our floor is ceramic tile with oak inlay. It's probably time to replace it, too.  The door on the left is the door to the basement and you can see the door to the garage straight ahead in the entry hall.

This is the view from the family room couch.
When sitting at the counter you can see into the hallway where our guest room, my husband's office and a full bath are.
I have always loved white kitchens and this change has been wonderful!

Thanks for visiting!  I've been working on refinishing some Bergere chairs for our living room and hope to show them to you soon.  I'm also refinishing a kitchen table and chairs for my daughter and my husband is making a new top for the table.

So, I'll be back in a couple of days!

  2. I love the unusual shape of your kitchen and think it looked fine before, but I know what it's like to be tired of something or just not like it. I'm glad you're happy with the change. :) Thanks for sharing. I just wish there was one more picture .... taken from over by the end of the cabinets to the right of the stove, and toward the opposite counter area, to the left of the sink. I'm curious how that is laid out, lol. Thanks again. :)

    1. Thank you! You might see the angle you're looking for in my Spring Home Tour. I think that angle shows our dining room and living room and because I've made changes in there, I am waiting to reveal them. After I do, I'll do another home tour and try to show the complete layout. Thanks for visiting!

  7. What a transformation! Simply changing the color scheme made the kitchen look ten times better than the previous one. I guess all that white helped make the area look more clean and cozy, huh? Your contractors definitely did a great job, Lynda. Thanks for sharing and all the best to you! :)

  8. While your kitchen is not unattractive before, I agree that the latest change has improved its appearance a lot! Changing the color of the walls and cupboards made your kitchen look livelier and brighter. And I have no doubt that your positive outlook added colors to it. I’m also happy for you that your kitchen transformation ventures turned out successful, Lynda. Great job!

  9. Have been looking at your kitchen again from start to finish again, it is lovely. I love the last posting with the updated "Frenchy" feel. I was curious as I just noticed that you had a microwave above your stove and now it is gone. Do you still have one? did you install a fan above stove as I really like the vent box above it, would love to do one for our kitchen which we are getting things together to make our updates just don't have a clue as to how though. Again, wonderful job!

    1. Hey Candy! We still have a microwave and it's sitting on the kitchen cabinet as you go into the hall way. We installed a vent above the stove and ordered two drawer faces, like our cabinet doors, to make a vent cover and shelf. Thank you so much!

    2. I'm probably going to drive you crazy with this one, have finished painting our cabinets and have just a few things to complete. Still looking at your vent cover, would love to do one just not sure how you boxed it in. Is it a standard vent with the small hood or something different? We still haven't purchased one as yet and the space is open because our old one "died".
Thanks for your input, hope your Bible studies are going well.

    3. Hi Candy! You're not driving me crazy! Sorry it took me so long to answer. I've been helping my daughter with projects at their house and have not been paying attention. We used a vent and vent frame we bought at Amazon. The controls on it are on the bottom so that you can reach them. After installing it, my husband just boxed it in. We used a drawer front on the front of it. I hope this helps! if you need the link to the vent, let me know!

    4. Thanks Lynda, we finally have the kitchen complete with the exception of the hood. Still trying to decide on regular hood or a custom one similar to yours. Do you have the link to what you purchased, so afraid we will purchase the wrong thing. Thanks again, Hope you are having a great evening.
      Blessings, Candy

    5. Hi Candy!
We have a 30" stove so we ordered a Broan pm250 Power Module Range Hood and Broan LB30 30" Hood Liner from Amazon. We have Amazon prime and so our shipping was free. If you order often, it's worth it to get prime. The liner holds the vent in place. The vent is about 28" wide. Hope this helps and you get your kitchen done!
      love and blessings~
